Current status and performance statistics

The program has over the years witnessed a steady growth despite unfavourable local and international economic environment. The opening up of US market under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) in May 2000 which offered duty/quota free access for African made apparel propelled rapid expansion of investment, exports and employment within the zones. This is highlighted below in the Table 1 : key indicators. The EPZ sector is now one of the economic growth points. Notably, export led industrialization in textiles and electronics also served as cornerstones in the rapid growth that characterized the newly industrializing economies of East Asia in the 1980s and 1990s.

Tables 1 and 2 below shows a five year trend of performance indicators of EPZ program and the sector's contribution to the national economy.
