The Export Processing Zones Authority was established in 1990, by the EPZ Act CAP 517, Laws of Kenya. The Authority’s mandate is to promote and facilitate export oriented investments and to develop an enabling environment for such investments. The EPZ Authority is a State Corporation, under the Ministry of Trade and Industry.
The Authority is provided with general direction by a Board comprising 15 members appointed from both the private and public sectors. The Board is headed by a Chairman appointed by the President.
The day to day operations of the Authority is managed by a staff of 142 headed by a Chief Executive. EPZ Authority staff operate from the Head Office at Athi River Export Processing Zone, the Athi River EPZ zone management office and at the Mombasa Office at Kipevu Zone.
The Authority’s budget comes partly from the Exchequer and from Appropriations in Aid or self-generated revenues obtained from licence fees, rentals and other service fees.
